Dressed in a modern shaped school uniforms Chanel’s models were a representation of herself back when she was spending her days raised by nuns.
We all know the story of Chanel. Her life’s story has been told again and again through movies and clips and talks around the world. Probably because she was one of those designers whose life’s ordeal made her clothes so unique.
After Karl Lagerfeld’s death, we all were devastated and left wondering who would be able to fill his shoes after he so successfully represented Chanel’s legacy.
With this Couture Collection we were able to see what the “new creative leader” of Chanel, Virginie Viard, can do with a fashion house with such a big history.
We sure understand that it is difficult to fill the late’s Karl Lagerfeld’s shoes when he did such a fantastic job at preserving the vibe this important house has mastered through the years. So, we understand the pressure not only to do well, but to be another worthy successor.
In a good enough put together set that resembled a garden, which may be very inspiring to some but didn’t manage to wow me the way Karl’s sets used to, Viard presented her own version of Chanel’s couture that was basically the classic tweed suit in various versions and forms, and all of them resembled a throw back uniform. The suit was transformed into a school uniform, an idea that apparently the designer always had in mind of doing, but never really could because of Lagerfeld. Now that she had her chance I am not sure, personally, if that couture excited me.
From fashion houses, such as Chanel, you always expect to be blown out of your mind. You expect to be amazed and thrilled over every little piece, so it was kind of sad for me that all I saw was the tween suit in so many versions.
That doesn’t mean that I didn’t enjoy the show, or I didn’t pick out some looks that I believe are very Chanel appropriate. Obviously, like I always do, I found some pieces that interested me more than others.
The color palette in which Viard chose to move, was pretty basic with neutral and black and white colors combined. A safe and very smart choice when you want to create such a collection and when you have in your hands such a sophisticated fashion house.
Overall, I believe it was a fairly good effort from Viard. Very elegant, but in a conservative way, that did not bother me. I expect, like all fashion enthusiast who follow Chanel’s collections, to see more from her couture collections.
