There is not a single person in this world that doesn’t think of the famous boy band from our teenage years when listening to the name… Jonas.
Come on, don’t play cute with me, we’ve all rocked on with the Jonas Brothers when we were younger, but this post is not an appreciation one for them. This post is all about food, because who doesn’t love food?
I like visiting restaurants around Athens. Every time I see or hear about a restaurant around Athens with delicious food of all kinds of cuisine, I immediately look it up and annoy people to come with me when I go get a taste. What can I say, I am an honest foodie and let me tell you there is nothing wrong with that. Life can be turned upside down the moment you get the flavor of a delicious burger or the whiff of a large marinated meat being cooked. Are you hungry yet?
This time I visited a burger bar in Athens and more specifically in Marousi. Located at the side of a small square, Jonas the Burger Bar is cooking all sorts of tasty burgers for you and your friends. You can live the “American burger dream” while in Athens, the city that has a million souvlaki places.
Burgers will always be the ultimate fast-food treat, but finding the right one for you can take a while. I mean we’re not the same, food chains around the world with burgers that people find amazing might be indifferent to some and that’s all because we’re all having different likes and dislikes.
It’s not that I did not enjoy my burger at Jonas burger bar, because trust me it was one of the most best burgers I’ve had. But let me take things from the beginning…
The Place
Wishing to one day visit a classic American diner is a wish that has made it to my long things-I-want-to-do-before-I-die list, but having a replica of one so close to me is the closest I can get to semi fulfill that wish. Truthfully, the bar was not exactly having the ultimate American vibe, but the decoration, the large booths, the colors and the music were all actually very close to at least making you feel like you’re out of Greece.
Dark red, grey and black color palette that fitted the whole night vibe, since this is a bar. We visited during daytime, so I am a bit curious to see what the place looks like at night and if the Bud neon sign shines as bright as I believe.

The Food
Rich flavors, burger and fries served in a diner way with the little basket and the paper on the tray, fluffy bread and the meat.. oh the meat. I don’t want to raise your expectations to new levels, but let’s just say that the meat was very well cooked just like the double bacon on my burger and the bread didn’t seem a day old which was exactly what I was hoping. I have been to places with breads’ that not exactly fresh so that, personally, was a big relief.
I got a double beef burger with bacon, caramel onions, mayo sauce, lettuce and tomato with fries on the side and my boyfriend got a chicken crispy one with onion rings, bacon, cheese and fries on the side as well. For the middle we also chose parmesan sticks with barbeque sauce which was a very nice starting dish.
The portion was quite large for me, but I managed to eat the entire burger and some fries. The issue was the fact that the fries had a little more oil for my taste, but they were still crispy and a good company for my burger.
I love caramel onions, especially on burgers. They always manage to add a very sweet flavor to a sour dish and the balance is quite interesting for my taste buds. The onion rings, although made from the same base, were not as appealing to me as one would believe. Indifferent and a bit unnecessary on the burger on my part, but my boyfriend did not mind at all.
The double beef burger was cooked very well, it still had some juices flowing which can only mean that it was cooked with care, something that I greatly appreciate. The fact that the fries were put in a red plastic basket only made it look more diner-y that before.

The People
We were admittedly the first ones there, so I can’t really be the judge of whether or not this place is crowded on weekends or not. Although, there was another group of people joining as we were living, overall, the place was quiet, just like the rest of the neighborhood. There was only one waiter and he was very kind. Eager to help us with the menus, to inform us when they are changing their catalogs and what’s to come, I really appreciated how quick and kind he was to us. He also made a few pointers on what materials were quite spicy and others that are not so much. He was very helpful and I believe he’ll be with you too.
You could say that Jonas’s burger bar is like a typical burger restaurant, which is not a lie. The food is worth a try if you’re ever around that area, but to be honest with you all no matter how lovely the decor was I believe it’s the kind of place that won’t thrill you, but will leave you well-fed.
